Presentation of the Course

The Degree Programme in Languages, Literatures and Intercultural Studies (Class L-11) trains graduates with advanced competences in modern foreign languages and their respective literatures, combined with skills in critical analysis and intercultural communication.

This three-year programme (180 ECTS) aims to combine theoretical knowledge of linguistic systems and literary traditions with the practice of cultural interpretation and the acquisition of transversal competences in the digital and communicative fields.

The programme prepares students both for further study in related Master’s Degree programmes and for employment in professional contexts related to culture, publishing, and communication

1. Learning objectives

The educational objectives of the Degree Programme are achieved through a coherent progression of core, characterising, and related courses. The first two years focus on acquiring fundamental competences in foreign languages and cultures, linguistics, and literature, as well as on developing a solid foundation in the historical-philosophical and methodological aspects of the humanities.
The third year emphasises applied and intercultural dimensions, including elective courses, workshops, internships, and the final dissertation.

The distribution of the 180 ECTS across the different subject areas reflects the balance between theoretical knowledge and practical skills as outlined in the programme objectives.
Elective activities and internships support the students’ initial orientation towards future professional paths and second-cycle degrees (LM-37 and LM-36).

For a transparent evaluation of programme effectiveness, please refer to the employment statistics (AlmaLaurea) and student satisfaction data (SISValDidat).

The Degree Programme offers three curricula, which share the same educational framework but differ in their linguistic focus and international structure.

2. Career opportunities

Upon completion of the three-year programme, graduates will have developed advanced competences in two foreign languages, together with a solid background in linguistics, philology, and literary criticism.
They will be able to analyse, interpret, and contextualise linguistic and literary texts and phenomena from a comparative and intercultural perspective, while also relating them to the Italian linguistic and cultural context.

Moreover, graduates will acquire digital literacy and research methodologies relevant to communication and information management in both academic and professional settings.

The skills developed throughout the programme can be applied in a variety of professional contexts, both in Italy and abroad, including:

  • Traditional and digital publishing, press offices, editorial work, text revision and editing;
  • Linguistic and cultural consultancy for publishing houses, media organisations, literary agencies, and the arts and entertainment sectors;
  • Journalism and cultural communication, involving writing, critical analysis, and dissemination of cultural content;
  • International relations, cultural cooperation, and intercultural communication, within public institutions, NGOs, and voluntary organisations;
  • Organisation of artistic and cultural events, such as conferences, festivals, and other initiatives promoted by public or private institutions and enterprises.

The Bachelor’s Degree also provides the appropriate foundation for admission to Master’s Degree Programmes LM-37 (Modern European and American Languages and Literatures) and LM-36 (Languages and Literatures of Africa and Asia), as well as to other postgraduate programmes in the fields of linguistics, literature, and intercultural studies.

3. Admission requirements

3.1. General requirements

To enrol in the Degree Programme, applicants must:

  • Hold a secondary school diploma or an equivalent foreign qualification recognised by the Italian authorities;
  • Demonstrate a good command of the Italian language, both written and spoken;
  • Possess a basic knowledge of at least one foreign language (for example, English);
  • Take the TOLC-SU (Test Online CISIA for Humanities Studies).

3.2. Requirements for English language

Students intending to include English in their study plan—as a first language, second language, or elective—must pass a mandatory B1-level test to verify reading comprehension and language use.

Students who do not pass the test may still enrol, but cannot include English in their study plan until the test is successfully completed. Multiple test sessions are held annually; dates are published on Degree Programme website (https://www.cl-llsi.unifi.it/vp-357-test-di-lingua-inglese.html) and the School website (https://www.st-umaform.unifi.it/vp-179-per-iscriversi.html)

Students who hold a B1 or higher language certification, issued in the last 36 months by MIUR-recognised institutions, are exempt from the test. An updated list of valid certifications and test session dates is available here: https://www.cl-llsi.unifi.it/vp-357-test-di-lingua-inglese.html

3.3. Requiremente for International students

International students wishing to enrol in Curriculum D42 – Linguistic, Literary and Intercultural Studies must possess a B2-level Italian language certification issued by one of the following CLIQ-accredited institutions (Certificazione Lingua Italiana di Qualità):

  • Società Dante Alighieri
  • Università per Stranieri di Perugia
  • Università per Stranieri di Siena
  • Università degli Studi Roma Tre

This requirement does not apply to students participating in exchange programmes (e.g., Erasmus) or those enrolling in the bilateral curricula C09 and C80, for which admission is based on a pre-selection interview that also evaluates Italian language proficiency.
